TEA HOUSE

While studying abroad in Japan, the teahouse Shōnantei, Saihōji in Kyoto was studied in depth. Particular interest was taken in the relationship to how the structures were constructed, their orientation to their exteriors and the craftsmanship that went constructing these ritualistic spaces.

This specific teahouse was notable for its large size, moon viewing platform and delicately manicured garden space. The study highlights an effortlessness to antique forms of Japanese construction, juxtaposed with the clear complexity.
